What's In The Bag?
Written by Jim Gerhold
Many times a great teaching tool is our natural curiosity. Ever heard the saying, "curiosity killed the cat, satisfaction brought it back"? Our human nature is built in such a way that we are drawn to things that encourage our curious mind. I have set the stage for a fun and interesting lesson plan. What's in the bag is a simple way to get kids to take note of your theme or lesson objective for that morning. There are three things you need to know for success in planning this object lesson.
First, find a small object that will fit into a colorful lunch sack size. Practice your routine until you have it well prepared and memorized so that you do not need any "cheat sheets". Second, place the sack in plain view during the service or class. Make mention to it during the first part of the service or class time. You may even want to pick it up several times and take a peak inside to inspire some imagination or begin the creative juices flowing. Last but not least, share this important point of your lesson plan. Their minds are with you as you "bring home the gold". Keep it short and to the point as you challenge them to a deeper relationship with God.
If your presentation is to the point, powerful and fun you can use this technique about once a quarter. The key is to make it a exciting and interesting object lesson setting up further usage of the "bag" at another time.
